Summary:
Biographical material, correspondence, diaries, writings and notes, scrapbooks, family business records,printed material, original artwork, sketches, a sketchbook, drawings, landscape designs, and photographs, including cartes de visites albums, cyanotypes, tintypes, and glass plate negatives (broken), and miscellaneous items, documenting the careers and personal lives of portrait painter Oliver Ingraham Lay and his son, landscape architect Charles Downing Lay. Also found are additional Lay family papers, including those of the Laura Gill Lay family (wife of Charles Downing Lay) and the papers of Fidelia Bridges, 1857-2000, undated (1.4 linear ft.).

Biography Note:
Charles Downing Lay, landscape architect, painter, writer, etcher; New York, Stratford, Conn.; b. 9/3/1877, Newburgh, N.Y.; d. 2/15/1956 Charles D. Lay was the first student to receive a degree in LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE at Harvard University. He became the Landscape Architect for the City of New York and was one of the founders of the professional journal, Landscape Architecture. Oliver Ingraham Lay, painter; New York, Stratford, Conn.; b. 1845; d. 1890. Oliver Ingraham Lay was a regular exhibitor at the Century Association and the National Academy of Design. His work is in museum collections in the United States and England, including the National Academy of Design, the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Picture Gallery, Stratford-upon-Avon, England.
Provenance:
Donated 2002 by George C. Lay, the grandson of portrait painter Oliver I. Lay and the son of landscape architect and painter Charles Downing Lay.
