Summary:
The papers of curator Philip Brookman relate to his exhibitions, writings, and filmmaking projects, with the bulk of the collection consisting of correspondence and transcripts relating to the production and distribution of the Brookman's 1988 video documentary about Chicano art in California, Mi Otro Yo (My Other Self), that grew out of the exhibition and conference Califas: An Exhibition of Chicano Art and Culture in California, held at UCSC in 1981 and 1982. [Brookman worked as exhibition coordinator responsible for the scheduling and management of the traveling exhibition.]
Also included are correspondence, notes, loan agreements, and printed material concerning both Califas and another exhibition, Asco 83 (1983), held at the Mary Porter Seson Art Gallery of UCSC; correspondence, printed material, and Brookman's draft catalog essays concerning the exhibitions Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation, and Forty Years of California Assemblage; correspondence, transcripts, printed material, slides and photographs regarding the exhibition War and Memory: In the Aftermath of Vietnam, held at the Washington Project for the Arts, 1987; papers concerning Chicano Park in San Diego, the Border Art Workshop/Taller de Arts Fronterizo (BAW/TAF), contemporary Native American art, and the book Culture Wars: Documents from the Recent Controversies in the Arts, edited by Richard Bolton, 1992, as well as files on individual artists such as David Avalos, Rolando Catellon, Alonzo Davis, Louis Hock, Yolanda Lopez, Patricia Mercado, Ernesto Palomino, Robert Sanchez, Elizabeth Sisco, Domingo Ulloa and others; and miscellany.

Biography Note:
Curator; California and Washington, D.C. Brookman was director of the Mary Porter Seson Art Gallery at the University of California, Santa Cruz, 1974-1983, an independant curator in 1984, a curator at El Centro Cultural de la Raza, San Diego, 1985-1986, a curator at the Washington Project for the Arts, 1987-1997, and Curator of Photography and Media Arts at the Corcoran Gallery of Art since 1993. He is the creator of the documentary Mi Otro Yo (My Other Self) with his wife, Amy Brookman, about Chicano art in California; which grew out of the Califas conference held at the University of California at Santa Cruz (UCSC) in 1982.
