Summary:
Correspondence; writings; subject files concerning the Artists Equity Association, printed material; and photographs relate to Washington's work as an artist, sculptor, and lecturer in the Seattle, Wash. area. Correspondence, 1938-1988, mainly consists of letters to Washington from his relatives, wife and friends expressing their admiration of his work and lectures. Also documented is his involvement in Seattle community organizations, among them the Pacific Arts Center, Washington State Arts Commission, Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Correspondents include Kenneth Callahan, Anne Gould Hauberg, and Val M. Laigo and an original Christmas card from George Tsutakawa.
Writings by Washington, 1958-1970, include articles for the Seattle Post Intelligencer, the Mt. Zion Newsletter, and the Puget Sounding relating to Washington's artwork, his concerns for fellow African Americans, his teacher, Mark Tobey, and his strong religious beliefs. Subject files, 1948-1963, relate to Washington's positions as secretary and delegate for the Artists Equity Association, Seattle chapter, and contain letters from Lincoln Rothschild, President of the AEA, and a letter from the Philadelphia Chapter criticizing the policies of the AEA, such as the voting power of the New York Chapter and the AEA's need to focus more on "artistic creation", AEA newsletters, roster lists, exhibition announcements, minutes, and reports from annual meetings.
Printed material, 1944-1989, consists of newspaper and magazine clippings, exhibition announcements and catalogs, newsletters and programs from various organizations, and church material. Photographs, 1964-1969, 1980-1981, and 1989, are of Washington and his sculptures.
