Summary:
Typescripts of Sargent letters to various people, 1883-1923, and photographs from an exhibition on Sargent.
REEL 1407: Typescripts of 34 letters, mostly from Sargent to Emily Sargent, Miss Stephens, and to his sister, Mrs. F. Ormond.
REEL 1820: 49 photographs and a catalog from "John Singer Sargent and the Edwardian Age: The Documents," an exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts, 1979, organized jointly by the Leeds Art Galleries,the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Detroit Institute of Arts, including photograph reproductions of Sargent, his parents, other family members, and his Chelsea studio; photos of Henry James, John D. Rockefeller, and Woodrow Wilson, with photographs of Sargent's portraits of them; photos of other Sargent sketches and paintings; and a photo reproduction of Paul Helleu at work in his studio.

Biography Note:
Sargent was a portrait painter; London, England. R. L. (Richard L.) Ormond is Sargent's great nephew and a Sargent scholar. Sargent was born in Florence and educated in Europe. Portrayed members of high society and aristocracy and became one of the most sought after portraitists of his day.
Provenance:
Typescripts donated 1968 and the exhibition related photographs and catalog in 1979 by R. L. Ormond. The exhibition was organized jointly by Ormond from the National Portrait Gallery, London, and the Detroit Institute of Arts.
