The Archives of American art does not own the original papers. Use is limited to the microfilm copy.
Correspondence, photographs, sketches, scrapbooks, news clippings, receipts for supplies. Most of his correspondence was with galleries (especially Noonan-Kocian Co. in St. Louis, Mo.), private collectors, associations, and other artists.

Shuler-Berninghaus collection microfilmed as part of the Art and Artists of New Mexico microfilm project of the Archives Division, State of New Mexico Records Center, June 1970. It was donated to the Records Center by Evelyn Shuler, daughter of Berninghaus's wife Winifred, October 1969.
