A career resumé; letters from friends and associates commenting on his two books, ENAMELING (1951) and BASIC DESIGN (1960); photographs of Bates and of his work; 5 scrapbooks which contain book covers designed by Bates, clippings, exhibition notices, etc.; 5 scrapbooks containing ca. 450 working sketches for his enamels, many on religious topics; and a transcript of an undated interview in which Bates discussed his enameling methods and the relationship of his work to his interest in gardening.
