Summary:
Autobiographical letter (and accompanying typescript) written from Watertown, [South] Dakota, to Dr. Jesse C. Green, Nov. 12, 1888, in which Banvard boasts of his achievements, notably that the first chromo made in America was taken from one of his paintings ("The Orison"). In addition, a newspaper clipping touches upon his career.

Biography Note:
Panorama, landscape, and portrait painter. Born and raised in New York City; painted Ohio and Mississippi rivers; lived in Louisville, Kentucky, and Watertown, South Dakota; first chromo made in America was taken from one of his paintings ("The Orison"); died on May 17, 1891.
