Video Title:
Chief Curator Nancy Pope: The Dead Letter Office, a Unique Part of America’s Postal System
Description:
At the March Lunchtime Lecture, we welcome Nancy Pope, Chief Curator of Postal History at the National Postal Museum. To celebrate Women’s History Month, Ms. Pope talked about the Dead Letter Office, a unique part of America’s postal system since 1777. Undeliverable mail and packages ended up at the Dead Letter Office, where specialists tried to decipher handwriting, incomplete addresses, and other ambiguities. Over time, the Dead Letter Office evolved into what we know today as the Mail Recovery Center. What does all this have to do with Women’s History Month? You’ll have to watch the lecture to find out! Date of lecture: March 29, 2017
