Summary:
"The Merikins documentary film : the forgotten freedom fighters" was produced to highlight the historical and cultural ties between the United States and Trinidad & Tobago, by exploring the background and family linage of the Merikin population. The Merikin story began during the War of 1812 the British Navy offered freedom and land to slaves who would fight on the British side. After the war, the British government made good its promise settling over 700 freed slaves in Trinidad. These slaves formed a community known as the Merikins (from the word, "Americans") and although they were slaves in America and fought against the United States, the Merikins were proud of their American heritage and brought their religion and music to Trinidad"--Letter of transmittal.
