Identification of author based on printed document completed by hand, laid in volume 1 (1 sheet ([1] page), 11 x 13 cm.): East Africa Protectorate. Gun tax receipt for the year 1909 ... no. 13940, issued to Major A.W. Quilter of Nairobi, 29 Oct. 1909, signed by district commissioner R. Skene, district of Mombasa.
The volumes are written by hand in pencil and ink, on the recto side only of the leaves. The journal entries were usually written daily, or several times a week; the length of the entries varies from a few lines to several pages.
Some place names mentioned in the journal: Nairobi; Kisii; Gucha (Kuja) River; Riana River; Molo Station; and Mombasa.

SCNHRB copy (volume 1, 39088017559238; volume 2, 39088017559279) formerly belonged to the Africana collector Russell E. Train. Mr. Train is thought to have acquired the volumes through autograph dealer Winifred A. Myers Ltd. of London. A note on W.A. Myers stationery addressed to "Dear Mr. Brodie" and signed "Ruth Shepherd" is laid in.

SCNHRB copy of volume 1 has a commercially-produced black buckram binding, with lined paper, and blue decorated edges; volume 2 has a commercially-produced green embossed-cloth quarter binding with marbled paper boards, and lined paper. Volume 2 has a bookseller's printed label (for the seller of the original blank volume) on back paste-down endpaper: A. & N.C.S. Ld. [Army & Navy Cooperative Society Limited] Stationery Dept., 105 Victoria St., S.W.

Journal kept by Major A.W. Quilter of Nairobi, Kenya, describing his travels on safari and his game-hunting activities in East Africa. Quilter describes events that happened to him and other members of his party on safari, gives details on the animals he had shot (for instance, hippopotamus, elephants, lions, bongos, and impalas), and mentions some of the people he met on his travels, including Kermit Roosevelt.
