Bliss, Susan D. "A Friendship that Built a Fine Collection." The Smithsonian Torch (May 1984): 1, 3.
The exhibition "James McNeill Whistler at the Freer Gallery of Art" opens. It celebrates the sesquicentennial of the American artist James McNeill Whistler's birth. The Freer Gallery exhibition also commemorates the relationship between Whistler and Charles Lang Freer, the collector who endowed the Freer Gallery of Art. 300 works from the Freer's collection, including Whistler's famous Peacock Room, are included in the exhibition. Chinese, Japanese, and American ceramics that complement Whistler's works and photographs of Whistler from the Freer Archives are also on display.
The exhibition is organized by David Park Curry, curator of American art at the Denver Art Museum. The installation is designed by architect George Sexton.
