Summary:
To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of James Smithson, founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution, a three day celebration was held September 16, 17, 18, 1965. The event included an academic procession. The procession, some of whom are shown here going across the Mall away from the Smithsonian Castle which is visible in the background. Leaders, dressed in their academic robes, from the fields of the sciences and the humanities took part in the procession.
