Summary:
Monograph uses newly discovered and never before printed candid images of the Scopes "Monkey" Trial of 1925 to provide a behind-the-scenes view of the "trial of the century" and the personalities that were mostly deeply involved. Using images and documents from Science Service science writers Watson Davis and Frank Thone, LaFollette lets readers witness the trial from their perspective. The July 1925 case of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes in Dayton, Tennessee, pitted the famous lawyers and orators William Jennings Bryan and Clarence Darrow against one another over the issue of whether evolution could be taught in public schools. The trial riveted the nation during the summer of 1925, pitting tradition and religion against science.
