The Central States Anthropological Society was originally called the Central Section of the American Anthropological Association and was sometimes informally designated the Central States Branch. The organization was founded to serve anthropologists of the central regions of the United States who found it difficult to attend meetings of the American Anthropological Association, which were usually scheduled, in earlier times, in the eastern states. CSAS adopted its current name in 1951 and, in 1967, became an autonomous organization, independent but affiliated with the American Anthropological Association.
