James Smithson (c.1765-1829) left a bequest which was used to found the Smithsonian Institution. His remains were brought from Italy to the United States in 1904.
Display case with James Smithson memorabilia and Smithsonian mace that was added during the renovation of the Smithson crypt in the Smithsonian Institution Building, or Castle, in 1974.
