Summary:
This accession consists of records documenting research performed by the staff of the Department of Zoological Research. The majority of the records were created and maintained by Devra G. Kleiman who served as Scientist, 1972-1982; Acting Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1982-1983; Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1983-1984; Assistant Director for Zoological Research and Education, 1984-1985; Assistant Director for Research, 1985-1996; Assistant Director of Zoological Research, 1996-1997, and Senior Scientist, 1997-2001. Smaller amounts of records were created by John Frederick Eisenberg, Resident Scientist, 1971-1979, and Assistant Director for Animal Programs, 1979-1982; Helmut K. Buechner, Senior Ecologist, 1972-1975; James M. Dietz, Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program; and others. Research topics documented include the Smithsonian-Venezuela Research Project, golden lion tamarins, giant pandas, rhinoceroses, elephants, tasmanian devils, chinchillas, and other rodents and small mammals. Some materials may have been created as part of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program, a subset of the department. Materials include proposals, reports, and budgets for research projects; correspondence and memoranda; film, video, and written observations, including field notes; original data and statistical and graphical analysis; audio recordings of vocalizations; and videotaped television programs and lectures about research projects. Some materials were created by predecessor offices, including the Office of Animal Management (through 1979), the Office of Animal Programs (1979-1984), and the Department of Zoological Research and Education (1984-1985).
