Silvio A. Bedini was appointed as the first Deputy Director of the National Museum of American History, then the National Museum of History and Technology, and served from 1972 to 1978. After a year's vacancy, Douglas E. Evelyn took the position and served until 1991. Spencer R. Crew served as Deputy Director (Acting) in 1992, followed by Martha M. Shannon (acting), 1993-1994, and Deputy Director, 1995- .
