Thomas R. Harney joined the staff of the Smithsonian Institution in 1969 as Science Information Officer in the News Bureau of the Office of Public Affairs. In this capacity, he kept in touch with the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) to inform the public of research developments and exhibitions through news releases and articles. In 1976, he was appointed Writer-Editor at NMNH, and in 1990 he became NMNH's Public Information Officer.

They include news releases, photographs, newspaper clippings, brochures, and related materials concerning permanent and special exhibitions at NMNH; a biographical information file containing photographs, notes, and published materials on NMNH staff; a subject file primarily concerning NMNH activities, but also containing materials regarding exhibitions at the National Air and Space Museum; 35mm color slides of NMNH exhibitions, staff, and events; and audiocassette tapes of press conferences and presentations at or about NMNH.
