Godfrey of Bouillon conquers the Saracens under the battle cry, "God wills it" (Deus lo volt). Near him are the banners of the Holy Cross and Jerusalem; and he is followed by the Archbishop, carrying the Holy Lance. In the foreground, on the left, is seen old Raymond of Toulouse; and on the right, Tancred of Tarentum, in combat with Ethiopian foot soldiers. The artist has thrown into this work great power and action. It cost labor enough to have painted half-a-dozen canvases, of similar size, after the manner of the French school. [P. 26.]
