Educational Notes:
Today, you don’t have to look far to find a conveyor, or any type of device that mechanically moves materials. Conveyor belts move groceries and luggage, and moving walkways even more people! Factory conveyors move product and materials like the coal being transported in this picture. Conveyor machinery was an important invention in the late 18th century because it saved time and energy in factories. When Henry Ford invented the Model-T car in 1908, he used conveyor machinery in his factories to speed up the car-building process, but he didn’t stop there! Ford created a way for vehicles and other factory products to be put together even quicker by using an assembly line. The assembly line is a process in which machines and factory workers each have a unique part that they must complete before the product moves on to the next step. In a car factory, conveyor machinery is used to transport the car through each step in the process.
