This interim register report was collected from a postal service window at the Church Street Station Post Office, New York, New York. The report recorded the date, time and amount of transactions conducted at the window. The Church Street Station Post Office was open for business on the morning of September 11, 2001, but the last transaction for the day was recorded at 8:47 a.m. Employees and customers were ordered to leave the building following the attacks on the nearby World Trade Center.
The Church Street Station, located at the corner of Church and Vesey streets, faced World Trade Center building 7 to the west and buildings 5 and 6 to the south-southwest. The Church Street Post Office sustained damage from the force of the explosions, the debris of the fallen buildings, and from water used by firefighters working from the post office building to extinguish fires in the nearby World Trade Center. With the Church Street building closed, other post offices took on additional operations until the building was restored and reopened in 2004.
