Notes:
Robe. Opens in front, collarless, short sleeves. Base fabric has lengthwise stripes in multiple shades of medium and dark blue. Red cotton cloth and white cotton cloth appliquéd in geometric patterns around top and bottom thirds, both front and back, and at the ends of the sleeves. Dark blue lines embroidered in couched thread over appliquéd areas. According to Chisato Dubreuil, this type of robe is worn during a variety of ceremonies. Contemporary uses also include a political statement. Patterns on ceremonial garments were thought to protect the wearer from malevolent forces, disease and evil spirits. Made for the 1999 NMNH exhibit "Ainu: Spirit of a Northern People" using traditional Ainu materials and techniques.
