FROM CARD: "RIDING WHIP.--HANDLE OF ANTLER; THE LASH IS A DOUBLE LEATHER THONG. A BUCKSKIN LOOP TIED THROUGH THE UPPER END OF THE HANDLE. LENGTH, 34 INCHES. NEZ PERCES INDIANS (SHAHAPTIAN STOCK), LAPWAI RESERVATION, IDAHO. 9,042. COLLECTED BY DR. JAMES T. GHISCKN (SIC), U.S.A. THIS WHIP BELONGED TO "THE EAGLE OF LIGHT," CHIEF OF THE NEZ PERCES." COLLECTOR JAMES THOMAS GHISELIN WAS A MEDICAL OFFICER IN THE U.S. ARMY AND SERVED IN THE DEPARTMENT OF THE COLUMBIA FROM 1867 - 1874. HIS DONATION TO THE ARMY MEDICAL MUSEUM WAS SENT IN JAN. 1869. THE MATERIAL WAS COLLECTED BEFORE THIS DATE BUT MAY HAVE COME TO GHISELIN THROUGH SECOND PARTIES AS HE WAS GENERALLY STATIONED AT OR NEAR FORT VANCOUVER BETWEEN 1867 - 1869. TIPYAHLANAH KA-OU-PU ("THE EAGLE OF THE MORNING LIGHT," OR OF THE DAWN; ALSO CALLED "EAGLE OF THE LIGHT" OR "EAGLE FROM THE LIGHT") WAS A PROMINENT NEZ PERCE WHO WAS PRESENT AT THE 1855 AND 1863 TREATY NEGOTIATIONS BUT WAS RESISTENT TO ACCULTURATION PRESSURE.
