PAINTED BARK CLOTH PONCHO WITH LARGE SQUARE CUT OUT OF CENTER. THE PONCHO IS LIGHT YELLOWISH-BROWN WITH THREE BANDS OF BLACK DIAMONDS PAINTED ACROSS IT AND THE AREAS IN BETWEEN ARE INTERSPERSED WITH SHORTER DIAGONAL LINES OF BLACK DIAMONDS. HAS ORIGINAL PEALE TAG; ALSO OLD LABEL "B[ARRE]L NO 1, TAPA FROM SAMOA NOV. 1839, RECD JUNE 18, 1840 VIA BOSTON [SHIP]". EXAMINED AND SAMPLED BY KENNETH P. EMORY, BISHOP MUSEUM, JUNE 1941. EMORY MAINLY TOOK VERY SMALL SAMPLES, BUT SOME OTHER PIECES HAVE HAD LARGE PORTIONS CUT AWAY. THESE ALL SEEM TO HAVE BEEN CUT FOR PURPOSES OF SAMPLING FOR OTHER DEPARTMENTS, SUCH AS THE DIVISION OF TEXTILES, N.M.A.H.

Barkcloth poncho. A stiff, decorated bark cloth made up of two layers pasted together and having been glazed. The beater marks are parallel impressed on back, also visible on front.
Stored in Pod 4 oversize whole unit. Advance arrangements are needed for access.
