BARK CLOTH PAINTED FREEHAND MOSTLY BLACK WITH FOUR LINES OF BROWN TRIANGLES IN THE MAIN BODY OF THE CLOTH AND BORDERS ON TWO SIDES CONSISTING OF BROWN AND BLACK TRIANGLES. THIS BARK CLOTH HAD A RATHER LARGE PIECE CUT OUT OF IT, BUT IT HAS BEEN LOCATED AND SHOULD BE REATTACHED [done during conservation treatment in 2012; see note below]. HAS ORIGINAL PEALE TAG; ALSO AN OLD SHIPPING LABEL READS, "B[ARRE]L NO 1 TAPA FROM SAMOA NOV 1839 RECD JUNE 18 1840 VIA BOSTON [SHIP]". EXAMINED AND SAMPLED BY KENNETH P. EMORY, BISHOP MUSEUM, JUNE 1941.
FROM CARD: "1/4" WATER MARK. GLAZED BLACK ON ONE SIDE. NO FRINGE. ORIG. LABEL: "B1. NO. 1, TAPAS FROM SAMOA, NOV, 1839, RECD. JAN 18, 1840, VIA BOSTON)". OCCASIONAL RED BROWN TRIANGLES THOUGHOUT BLACK CENTRAL MASS. THIS INFORMATION GIVEN BY K. P. EMORY. 6/24/41. VERY SMALL SAMPLE ALSO TAKEN BY MR. EMORY." FROM CARD: "2951-57. CAT. NO. 2953, ORIG. NO. 1023."
E2953 was in two pieces but is now repaired and is a single object again.
