ONE OF TEN PANELS ORIGINALLY RECEIVED IN 1860. BLACK LACQUER FRAME. CENTRAL PART OF SCREEN COMPOSED OF THIN BAMBOO STRIPS SURROUNDED WITH PAPER. BRASS CORNER STRIPS. FROM CARD: "MAY 1969 OVER THE YEARS THESE HAD BADLY DETERIORATED BECAUSE OF THEIR FLIMSEY CONSTRUCTION, SO THAT ABOUT 1955 THE PARTS WERE TURNED OVER TO FREER CONSERVATION LAB, WHO RESTORED ONE TO BE PRESERVED.-R. ELDER. REMAINDER OF PARTS DISCARDED. ONE WAS ON LOAN IN DIRECTOR'S OFFICE FOR MANY YEARS. THESE ARE BLACK LACQUER FRAMES WITH THE SCREEN PARTS OF THIN BAMBOO STRIPS., SURROUNDED WITH PAPER (WHICH IS VERY FRAGILE), AND THE CORNERS HAVE BRASS STRIPS ATTACHED. INVENTORIED 1968. *THOUGH IT HAS NOT BEEN VERIFIED, IT SEEMS POSSIBLE THAT THESE WERE NOT FROM PERRY BUT WERE PART OF THE GIFT FROM THE EMPEROR OF JAPAN, DURING THE FIRST AMBASSADORS' VISIT IN 1860, TO PRES. JAMES BUCHANAN. R. ELDER. ESTABLISHED AS FIRST JAPANESE MISSION COLLECTION BY CHANG-SU HOUCHINS 3/30/1979.
