L-801 (Hixton Silicified Sandstone): Direct collection from outcrop. Not a collection from archaeological context. Known collection procedure. Collection includes raw material, outer surface, surrounding matrix, modern flint-knappers' work, and naturally-weathered specimens.
L-801 (Hixton Silicified Sandstone)
Hixton, also known as Hixton Orthoquartzite, is a quartzite or silicified sandstone. It is white, pink, light brown, honey, cream, tan, yellow, orange, lavender, maroon, or cinnamon in color. It has a chalcedonic to large grained, but smooth texture. Sugary in appearance and highly translucent. Deposits include boulders and veins of chalcedony-like material. Small chunks and flakes weathered from parent-rock.
Geology remarks: Epoch- Cambrian
Location remarks: Silver Mound; Olsen campground, Jackson Co. Wisc. (East off I-96 near Alma Center); A small hillock of quartzite, the last remnant of a prominent local questa.
Archaeology remarks: Fluted points of Hixton silicified sandstone found at the Chesrow mutlticomponent site near Kenosha, Wisconsin, some 280 miles from Silver Mound; Paquette Site located on the eastern end of Goose Lake approximately 8 miles southwest of the city of Marquette, Michigan and Lake Superior.; Silver Mound is not a mound site and there is no silver associated with the prehistoric quarry/workshop.
