L-466 (Huronian Chert)
Huronian Chert, also known as Yellow Onondaga and Delaware-Onondaga, is a glacial pebble chert. It is white, light gray, light tan, yellow, light gray and brown, sometimes mottled with light brown carbonate. When heat-treated the white color variety changes to tan, brown, red dark red, red with jasper-like appearance. When weathered it develops a hard, light brown cortex or becomes grey to grey white. May have cephalopod, gastropod, bivalve, siderite, or druzy quartz inclusions. Frequently coated with glauconite. It has a smooth, very fine grained texture. Deposits include nodules and glacial drift.
Geology remarks: Epoch- Middle Ordovician, Series- Caradocian, Stage- Wilderness, Group- Black River, Form- Gull River, Member- Lower Gull River
Location remarks: Southern Ontario, Canada; Western New York, northwestern Pennsylvania; Medonite Township, Simcoe County, Ontario; Quarries of the Lake Simcoe are at Coldwater, Uhthoff, and Waubaushene, Ontario.
Archaeology remarks: Madison points occur at Late Woodland sites of western N.Y.; Jack's Reef point in Portage site, Art Park, Lewistown, N.Y. collection; Jack's Reef point, Four Rod Road, Alden, N.Y. by Francis McQueen (1994); Site 33Wn337, Washington Co., OH, produced artifacts excavated by Kemrom, Cincinnati, Ohio, identified by JDH (4/7/1995); Heavy usage in NW Penna.
