L-1522 (Sandia Cave Chert): Direct collection from outcrop. Provenience includes bedrock. Not a collection from archaeological context. Known collection procedure. Collection includes raw material, outer surface, surrounding matrix, and naturally-weathered specimens.
L-1522 (Sandia Cave Chert): Collected chert samples along pathway up to Sandia Cave. Bedded and nodular glossy black to light grey opaque, fossiliferous chert. A seam of black chert occurs in the cave cutting directly across the entrance to more rooms about 12 feet from the entrance. Specimens were acquired for science.
Sandia Cave Chert is a black to light gray chert. When weathered it becomes lighter than raw coloration. It has inclusions of sponge spicules, crinoid stems, echinoderms, calcite filling, and possibly radiolaria. It has a smooth to glossy texture. Deposits include tabular and nodular in limestone matrix.
