Description:
This cast iron milepost stood near Frostburg, Maryland on the National Road, the most ambitious road building project undertaken in the United States at the time of its construction. Opened in 1818 between Cumberland, Maryland and Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), the National Road was the first highway built with federal funds and eventually was extended to Illinois. The National Road became one of the great highways of westward migration, carrying supplies to settlers near the Ohio River and frontier products to eastern cities.
