Description:
This deed of sale records the sale of an enslaved woman named Cassey (born 1819) by Mary McCarthey to Fleming C. Cheatham, both of Carroll Parish, Louisiana, on March 3, 1859. Cassey was 40 years old and was sold for $1,000.00. The deed was recorded by James W. Draughon, also of Carroll Parish. The paper is folded along the top edge of the first page, with text being on the front and reverse of one page and the second page having one blank side and the reverse of this second page containing the names of the involved parties and the date of the sale. Embossed into the final page of the deed is a seal depicting a Pelican with the words "RECORDER'S OFFICE" in the center and the words "STATE OF LOUISIANA / PARISH OF CARROLL" around the outer band.
