This collection contains notes, specimen catalogs, station data, maps, and sketches documenting field work related to collections in the U.S. National Museum Division of Fishes. Items in this collection are housed in the Smithsonian Institution Archives and in the Division of Fishes. Collectors include individuals employed by the Division of Fishes, such as Robert H. Gibbs, Jr., and Leonard P. Schultz, as well as other individuals who deposited specimens in the U.S. National Museum fish collection. This collection also includes records of cruises and collections made by the U.S. Bureau of Fisheries on vessels such as the Albatross, Fish Hawk, Grampus, and Pelican. Collecting localities are worldwide and include the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, the United States, Mexico, the Philippines, Kiribati, Panama, Australia, and other countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Collections were made in open ocean and coastal areas, as well as rivers, lakes, and other inland freshwater systems.
