Made by a Namgis Kwakwaka'wakw woman (the mother of Johnson Cook) for a Mamalilikulla Kwakwaka'wakw woman named Go-ma-newkw as part of her dowry; inherited by Lucy Hanuse (Kwakwaka'wakw, later Mrs. Lucy Brown), who sold it to an unknown dealer; included in a sale of Northwest Coast art at the May Company department store in Los Angeles, California; acquired by MAI in 1967 through an exchange with the May Company, operated by Native art collector Morton D. May (1914-1983).
