Dates reflect the Cartier letter (1942 Nov. 16) and the envelope (not scanned, postmarked 1943 Jan. 11). Pène du Bois' letter itself is dated 1942 Nov. 30.
Pène du Bois writes to his fiancée Bouché while he is in the army. He tells her about an "inter-ally" tennis match he played, answers her questions, and encloses two pieces of correspondence he thinks she will find interesting: one from the editor at Yank magazine which compliments the stories he has written for them, and one from Cartier regarding a ring he purchased for Bouché.
The first page is illustrated with a cartoon of a man wearing a suit made of many different fabric patches, with the caption "Mr. Crashaw the civilian clothing conservation gentleman."
