Summary:
Seventy taped recordings of untranscribed interviews with artists, panel discussions, lectures, and conferences and 5 transcripts of lectures by artists; correspondence; photographs; typescripts; and printed material.
Audio tapes include untranscribed interviews of Robert Motherwell, Nov. 10, 1964; Raymond Parker, John Opper and Tania, 1965; Stephen Greene, Robert Morris, and Jack Tworkov, Nov. 17, 1966; Marshall McLuhan and Jacob Blumner, Oct. 25, 1967; and Yayoi Kusama, Feb. 15, 1964; lectures delivered by Conant, Buckminster R. Fuller, Adolph Gottlieb, Frederick Kiesler, John Opper, James N. Wines and others; lectures and panel discussions of conferences of the Institute for the Study of Art in Education, Nov. 17, 1967 and Nov. 9, 1968; panel discussions sponsored by New York University, including "Synthesis in Modern Architecture, Painting and Sculpture," Oct. 22, 1965; and "The Art Student and the Future of the Avant-Garde, Nov. 29, 1966.
Also included are recordings of lectures and panel discussions, mainly transcribed, and partial typescripts, notes and other material relating to NYU's "Contemporary Artists on Art Series," organized and moderated by Conant, Oct.-Dec. 1960. Particpants in the series included Ilya Bolotowsky, Lawrence Calcagno, Helen Frankenthaler, Balcomb Greene, Stephen Greene, Hilaire Hiler, John Humphrey, George J. McNeil, Robert Motherwell, Reuben Nakian, Louise Nevelson, John Opper, Milton Resnick, Esteban Vicente, Ruth Vollmer and Hale Woodruff.
In addition, there are letters from James Brooks, Helen Frankenthaler, Philip Guston, Duane Hanson, Thomas Hess, Thomas Hoving, Sidney Janis, Philip Johnson, Allan Kaprow, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Sol LeWitt, Robert Motherwell, Ad Reinhardt, Larry Rivers, Mark Rothko, John Russell, Ben Shahn, Eve Sonneman, Theodoros Stamos, Edward M. M. Warburg, Adja Yunkers, and others, many relating to requests for employment or responses to Conant's letters asking artists to participate in classes or conferences; an unpublished study on the "Training of Artists," conducted by Conant for NYU in 1959, including correspondence and typescripts of statements by twenty-eight artists; a typescript of a lecture "Popular Culture," by Maxine Greene delivered at an NYU art education conference, 1971; photographs of participants in an NYU seminar, 1964; and miscellany.
