Scope and Contents:
Series 1.4 Ecuador, 1930-1968 and undated, includes materials related to two distinct expeditions to Ecuador. From 1931-1932 Matthew Stirling joined the Latin American Expedition to South and Central America and conducted an ethnographic study of the Jivaro people of Ecuador. He also spent time in Panama on this trip studying the Tule/Kuna Indians in Panama, but the bulk of documentation in this collection is regarding the Jivaro. From 1956-1957 Matthew and Marion Stirling embarked on a Smithsonian Institution/National Geographic Society expedition to Ecuador and conducted excavations in the Manabi Province. Materials include field notes, photographs, correspondence, articles, and clippings.

Material is arranged in 2 subseries: 1.4.1 Latin American Expedition to South and Central America, 1930-1938, undated; 1.4.2 SI/NGS expedition to Ecuador, 1952-1968, undated. Each subseries is arranged chronologically.
