Summary:
A New York bookseller, Warshaw assembled this collection over nearly fifty years. The Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Flour forms part of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Subseries 1.1: Subject Categories. The Subject Categories subseries is divided into 470 subject categories based on those created by Mr. Warshaw. These subject categories include topical subjects, types or forms of material, people, organizations, historical events, and other categories. Scope and Contents:
This material consists primarily of advertising cards, invoices, bills/receipts, scattered correspondence on letterhead stationery, notices, circulars, announcements, recipe books, printed advertisements, market reports, price lists, printed advertisements, .patents and trademarks from manufacturers and merchants of various types of flour. Such types include roller flour and core flour for foundry use. The flour was produced for both commercial and home use. It could be acquired by the barrel and half barrel. Many of the manufacturers also sold machines for producing flour including sieve cleaning attachments, bran dusters, middlings dusters, flour packers, testing sieves, wire bolting cloths, grit gauzes, grain separators and brush machines. These manufacturers and also distributor would sell other products including grass seed, corn, meal, starch, hay, tallow, plaster, cement, hides, calk, lamb and sheep skins, lime feed, shorts, fish and salt. Among these materials are unique forms of advertisements. The Freeman Milling Company created paper dolls. The company's name was printed on the clothing for the dolls. There are also a few pieces of correspondence from foreign countries. Among the advertising materials is information from the Farmers Union Grain Terminal Association. This program was established to. Of special interest to the researcher is Listers Diabetic Flour recipe book in box 2. Tylers Raw Food Cook Book found in box 4. Materials are organized alphabetically by name of company. Materials in box five are arranged by ty e including import/export documents, foreign correspondence, envelopes, images of African-Americans, children products, legal actions, market reports, patents and trademarks and related publications.

Provenance:
Flour is a portion of the Business Ephemera Series of the Warshaw Collection of Business Americana, Accession AC0060 purchased from Isadore Warshaw in 1967. Warshaw continued to accumulate similar material until his death, which was donated in 1971 by his widow, Augusta. For a period after acquisition, related materials from other sources (of mixed provenance) were added to the collection so there may be content produced or published after Warshaw's death in 1969. This practice has since ceased.
