Scope and Contents note:
Photographs documenting excavations in Chatham County, Georgia. There are images of scenery, dig sites, WPA workers, and pottery sherds and skeletal remains found during excavations at the Irene site, Bilbo site (CH 4), Walthour site (CH 11), Deptford (CH4), CH2 and CH8.
Biographical/Historical note:
Joseph Ralston Caldwell (1916-1973) was an archeologist best known for conducting Works Projects Administration (WPA) excavations in Chatham county, Georgia, circa 1937-1941. Caldwell then served as scientific aide to the National Museum's Director of Anthropology (1943-1945) and as an archeologist for the Smithsonian's River Basin Surveys (1946-1949). In 1957, he received a doctorate in Anthropology from the University of Chicago. From 1963 to 1964, Caldwell was a Fulbright professor of Archaeology at the University of Tehran and a professor of Anthropology at the Medical School of the National University of Iran. In 1967, he became a professor of Anthropology and Director of the Laboratory of Archaeology at the University of Georgia.
