The catalog, which has many missing pages at the beginning and end, lists, describes, and illustrates with small drawings attached to the text, geographically arranged collections of stone, clay, horn, and bone artifacts, plant remains, and faunal and human bones, gathered in many cases from Indian mounds in the Mississippi Valley area. Some items are from cave, surface, or unspecified types of sites; and some are from areas, notably Yellowstone Park and some Eastern states not in the Mississippi Valley. Additional contributors to the collection were L. H. Thing, John P. Rogan, J. M. Spainhour, and J. W. Emmert.
Biographical / Historical:
Much of the collection may be linked to the BAE mound explorations, ca. 1881-1889 under Cyrus Thomas. See Manuscript 2400 (Archeology, U.S.), and BAE Annual Report 12.
