The papers comprise materials relating to Conrad Kottak's research in Madagascar among the Betsileo people, 1966-1967. Included are village data, questionnaires, and a copy of Kottak's resulting monograph The Past in the Present: History, Ecology, and Cultural Variation in Highland Madagascar.
Biographical Note:
Conrad Philip Kottak (1942-) is a cultural anthropologist who has carried out extensive fieldwork in Brazil and Madagascar. He received his PhD from Columbia University in 1966 and joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1968.

The papers were donated by Conrad Kottak to the National Anthropological Archives in 2016.
